The Dermatology club of Trivandrum had its origin in the early nineties as an informal gathering of Dermatologists in and around Trivandrum city. The very idea was conceived by Professor Dr B K Hareendran Nair and Dr T V Gopalakrishnan during a meeting at South Park Hotel, Trivandrum. Dr MLD Unnithan as coordinator was entrusted the task of organizing the activities of this group which he carried out for almost a decade in an admirable manner.

The Dermatologists used to meet once in 2-3 months. All senior dermatologists such as Dr Krishnan Nair, Dr Chidambaram Pillai, Dr P A Sarojini and Dr Cynthia Basil were active members of this group. Many eminent personalities attended the meetings as guest speakers.

The major academic event organized by Department of Dermatology and Venerology, Medical College, Trivandrum in the past decade was the South Zone Conference of IADVL held at Kovalam in the year 2001. This event was a huge success, thanks to the dynamic leadership of Professor Dr TV Gopalakrishnan. He was ably assisted by Professor Dr Yogiraj who was the organizing secretary of the Conference.

The birth of Dermatology Club of Thiruvananthapuram as an official body was in the year 2002 with the nomination of Dr VK Potti as President, Dr Babukuttan as secretary and Dr G Nandakumar as treasurer. Since then the club has grown both in terms of membership as well as in the quality of academic activities. In the year 2005 Dr Sreekumar took over from Dr VK Potti as president along with Dr Abdul Samad as secretary and Dr G Nandakumar as treasurer.

They continued the good work of their predecessors. It was during their tenure the club organized a family get-together for the first time. Dr Padmaprasad was nominated as the president in the year 2006 along with Dr Remadevi TJ as secretary and Dr Sunil Kumar as treasurer. Thanks to their tireless efforts, in addition to the monthly meetings the club organized a full day state level CME in 2007 and 2008 along with a grand family get-together. Guest speakers from outside the state featured in the scientific sessions. A hugely successful hands-on workshop on lasers was organized in March 2008.

In 2008 July, Dr G Nandakumar was elected as president, Dr Remadevi TJ as Vice President, Dr Asha Zacharia as secretary and Dr Abraham George as treasurer. In 2009 and 2010 two well attended state level CME’s were conducted, which speakers from different parts of India. Both the CME’s where awarded credit hours by the TC Medical Council. It would also be worth mentioning that the activities of the club receive constant guidance and co-operation from the seniors as well as junior members.
